Analysis of biochemicals from algae - VAXNA

The goal of this project is to isolate, identify and define the growing algae and other microorganisms that have interesting characters for cultuvating in a larger scale. This goal will be archived by building up the infrastructure of Myskopun including infrastructure, strain collection, theoretical basis and networking. The aim is to increase knowledge of the microbial ecology of Lake Myvatn and develop skills that will be useful to isolate, identify and cultivate the microorganisms from the lake, thereby creating a basis for the basis for the production and sale of valuable biological by utilizing local geothermal energy.

The goal of the project is to use algae which has already been isolated and identifed and define them better. Do a comprehensive research on the algae, like VFA analysis, DNA analysis and a detailed study of the chemical composition of bioactive substances which the algae are producing. In this project is another sampling trip planed, where the samples will be cultuvated, isolated and analysed. The aim is to widening knowledge of the microbial flora of Lake Myvatn and make a good methodology on how to cultuvate and analyse freshwater algae.

Multiple utilization of geothermal heat in algae cultivation and utilization of biochemicals they produce

The project focuses on the analysis of options and a detailed feasibility and business plan for the cultivation of algae for MySkopun. The role of the employee is also seeking cooperation with important partners , algae producers as well as domestic and foreign researchers and target groups for estimated products . And at the same time prepare the future production and screen Lake Myvatn for algae which can be cultivated and extract valuable content from. Very strong emphasis will be placed on activities to support other activities for the region, especially tourism . In the project will be carried out preparatory work for the production of new products into the consumer market. The novelty of the project as a whole involves the utilization of waste heat for environmentally friendly innovation and economic development on the basis of algae cultivation with the aim to produce a market products and/or raw materials for industrial processing. Emphasis is  on improved utilization of resources.

The main goal of this project is to develop production process for growing and utilizing algae isolated from Lake Mývatn in a effective way.The focus will be on multiple uses of geothermal energy, both for using the heat source and the gases for the cultivation. With the production of natural products and practicality in mind and at the same tima use the natural resource whitch this region has to offer. The project will focus on diatoms, goldenalgae and Cyanobacteria which produces oils, pectin and silica. Conditions in Lake Mývatn area indicate that there is a better potential to cultivate algae. There is a short distance to the electrical- and thermal energy, not fully utilized today. The water flowing into lake Mývatn has the features to support algae blooming and by utilizing thermal energy to preliminary dry the biomass, will save substantial costs for the transport of raw materials that can not be completed on site.
