Algae found in Lake Myvatn
Diatomes
High level of Diatomes can be found in Lake Myvatn and the species Fragilaria is in majority. Diatomes is a very big group and has been extensively studied in Iceland.
Green algae - Lake Balls
Lake ball is a green algae found on the bottom of Lake Myvatn. Lake balls of this size are only found in two lakes in the world, Lake Myvatn and Lake Akan in Japan
Golden algae
Golden algae grow in Lake Myvatn, but have not been studied much. In Iceland only about 45 species are known. And therefore much can be investigated.
Cyanobacteria - Anabaena
Cyanobacteria is a blue-green algae/bactaria. It grows in huge quantities in Lake Myvatn. It´s blooming is in mid-July.
